Terraria developer Re-Logic has canceled spinoff Terraria: Otherworld following a level of progress in development disproportionate to its expectations for the title.
The studio pulled the plug earlier this week, saying it was “a bit further away from the finish line than [Re-Logic] had imagined.” From the Terraria forums:
“[T]he current state of the game remains equal parts far from that vision and beyond behind schedule from our initial planning when we shared Otherworld with all of you three years ago.”
Terraria: Otherworld Is Dead
Terraria: Otherworld, much similar to the game on which it’s based, was supposed to be a side-scrolling sandbox platformer set in an alternate dimension within the Terraria universe. Re-Logic and Engine Software announced it back in 2015 for PC, with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions being considered for a later release.
In the announcement, Re-Logic stressed that its goal has always been to deliver a quality game not shaped by time constraints. The studio said it did not want to compromise quality to speed up development.
“Our team has a clear vision for this game.”
Later in the development, Re-Logic had brought in Pipeworks Studios to examine whether the game was living up to the studio’s expectations. But this didn’t go well, and as such, it decided to cancel the game altogether rather than release an underdeveloped title to fans of the mega-hit Terraria.
Re-Logic is offering an apology for fans who might be disappointed with the news. It also said that it shouldn’t have shared details about the game publicly from the get-go.
“We will fully own that error in judgement.”
Re-Logic’s Plans For The Future
Re-Logic promises to be more careful about sharing information about projects in development, stating that it will only share details if it’s confident in regards to timing. It will also be more cautious about outsourcing companies for the development of its core projects, admitting it shouldn’t have gone to another studio in the case of Terraria: Otherworld.
“Moving ahead, our focus for the core development of new/future titles will be more inward and will seek to utilize our own people.”
Though the project is dead, Re-Logic says that there are still elements from the spinoff that have never been shared to the Terraria community, including art, design, and “a ton of amazing ideas.” Fans might end up seeing these in other projects, the studio hinted.
