Cornell researchers have made a little robot that may specific its feelings by touch, sending out little spikes when it’s scared and even getting goosebumps to specific delight or pleasure. The prototype, a cute smiling creature with rubber pores and skin, is designed to check touch as an I/O system for robotic tasks.
The robot mimics the skin of octopi which might flip spiky when threatened.
The researchers, Yuhan Hu, Zhengnan Zhao, Abheek Vimal and Man Hoffman, created the robot to experiment with new strategies for robot interplay. They examine the pores and skin to “human goosebumps, cats’ neck fur elevating, canine’ again hair, the needles of a porcupine, spiking of a blowfish, or a chicken’s ruffled feathers.”
“Analysis in human-robot interplay reveals robot’s capability to make use of nonverbal conduct to speak impacts their potential to be helpful to individuals, and also can have psychological results.
